Green roofing or a living roof could be the future of roofing. Learn what Google and Facebook are doing to join this roofing revolution.
It seems green roofing could be the new future of roofing. Being a long time roofer myself, I am intrigued by this roofing revolution. Hopefully by the end of this short article you will be able to say whether you agree or not.
What Exactly Is Green Roofing?
Green roofing is the ergonomically way to living greener and thus far, promoting a healthier environment for yourself and others around you. Since it’s based around nature and using plants, it improves air quality. Who doesn’t like fresh air? Also known as eco-roofing or living roofs serve many purposes like providing natural insulation, absorbing rainwater, creating a habitat for wildlife or lowering urban air temperatures to reduce the heat island effect.
It is typically completely or partially covered with a growing medium, or vegetation planted on a waterproofing membrane including other layers like drainage, a root barrier and irrigation systems. The green roof term is also used to describe roofs that use green technology like: a roof with solar thermal collectors, a cool roof or photovoltaic panels.
Two Types of Green Roofs
- Intensive Green Roofs – are thicker, heavier and require more maintenance but support a wider variety of plants.
- Extensive Green Roofs – are much lighter, with a light layer of vegetation.
There are several different ways in which the air is being polluted; exhaust fumes, chemical plants, power plants, nuclear waste, greenhouse gases. That’s just to name a few, all contribute into destroying the air in which we need to survive.
Green roofing can also help in preventing sewer overflow from occurring simply by keeping the water from running into the sewer systems thus eliminating the possibility of an overflow.
Who Is Utilizing Green Roofing?
Huge companies like Facebook and Google have elaborate green roofing plans…
People from all around the world adopting this way of living, from business owners to homeowners, several believe this is the way to live. It only takes one to start a revolution getting others involved and making a change for the better.
Places like Faroe Islands, Norway, Germany, Canada, Chicago, California, Manhattan and Toronto just to name a few, have decided to go green and its paying off greatly.
Benefits of Green Roofing
Since these roofs are green they are made with natural insulation, which is important because having a natural insulation setup does not require as much energy as the traditional roofing would need. This roofing also has UV blocking protection which extends the life of the roof enabling it to last a long time compared to the average conventional roofs.
These roofs also carry a price tag with them that many shy away from but the more people they jump on board and accept green roofing in their lives the more the price will drop. Within the roofing, there’s is also an irrigation system that works throughout to give you not only what you pay for but also what you need in promoting a healthy life and planet.

Or you could plant a garden by putting you green thumb skills to use. With just a little tender loving care, you can have a retreat that is welcome to whoever you wish to sit back and enjoy. Whichever way you look at it you can promote a healthy experience that will last a lifetime.
Is Green Roofing For You?
What will it be; green roofing or conventional roofing? I personally will stick with what I know well, which is conventional roofing. Overall it makes a lot of sense to want to go with the green roofing because it’s a positive change that produces wonderful results.
You can take control of what you do to make a difference and if that’s changing your roofing to lower energy rates, have cleaner air or just because you simply like the fact of being different, green roofing will not be short of what you expected, and you will be asking yourself why I didn’t do it sooner.
